New York has agreed to allow limited access to medical marijuana for severely ill patients.
The so-called Compassionate Care Act was announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo and state lawmakers.
The legislation does not allow the drug to be sold in plant form or smoked, but it can be administered through a vaporizer or in an oil-base.
Patients aged at least 21, who suffer from any one of a list of specified ailments – epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Lou Gehrig’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, neuropathies, spinal cord injuries, cancer and HIV/AIDS – would be eligible to use cannabis as treatment.
The move makes New York the 23rd US state to legalise some kind of availability of cannabis for therapeutic purposes.
