A local
multiple sclerosis sufferer felt relief this week when she heard the news that
the government would be further supporting the MS community.
Susan
Schneider, a local resident living with MS and an MS ambassador, was diagnosed
with the disease in 1994 and is bound to a wheelchair. A former
horticulturalist, her time is now dedicated to being an advocate for those with
MS.
On
Monday, the Alberta government announced a partnership with the MS Society to
improve support services for, and further research on, MS. On Wednesday,
Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. also announced a $1.2 million investment
for MS Research projects in Alberta.
“We are
pleased to partner with Novartis to advance MS research and treatment. It’s
important that we support medical research for debilitating conditions such as
MS so that we can improve and expand treatments for people living with MS,”
said Alberta health minister Fred Horne.
The Way
Forward is Alberta’s MS partnership that outlines a model for stronger
co-operation between the health system, the government and MS agencies.
A
collaboration of the Government of Alberta, AHS, the MS Society of Canada and
other community partners, The Way Forward signifies a commitment to expand the
knowledge of MS and to identify issues related to it.
Alberta’s
almost 14,000 MS patients will now be able to access resources and find
supports more easily.
“Basically,
it’s similar to having a GPS where we can find our way to services as needed.
It will help co-ordinate services to ensure that people with MS see a more
consistent level of service across the province,” said Schneider.
“Anything
from support groups to neurological clinics to travel barriers for rural
patients, I think this document and the relationship between the province and
the MS Society is going to really streamline being able to access services,”
said Schneider.
