Stem Cell Therapeutics expands patent portfolio in US, Japan

Biotechnology company Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp (CVE:SSS) reported Thursday that both the U.S. and Japan patent offices have granted the company patents for drugs used to treat stroke and multiple sclerosis.
The company said the first patent granted by the U.S. patent office relates to the use of a pregnancy hormone, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), to treat patients with diseased or damaged heart cells.
Meanwhile, its second patent issued in Japan is for granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) to treat white matter disorders.
White matter disorders include demyelinating diseases that comprise of multiple sclerosis, acute disseminating encephalomyelitis, diffuse cerebral sclerosis, and spinal cord injury.

“The rapid succession of granted patents in both neurology and now cardiology is a welcome development for Stem Cell Therapeutics Corp,” the company said in a statement Thursday.
