FOR horsewoman Lesley Smit, staying on a horse is no easy feat when Multiple Sclerosis throws out her balance.

The Stoneville resident and Midland Polytechnic West lecturer was diagnosed with the degenerative disease 15 months ago and was told she might never walk again.


But the 50-year-old has made a quick recovery and is now in training for the 2012 Equestrian Paralympic training squad.


Involved with horses since she was young, Ms Smit began riding at the Walliston Pony Club, before representing WA, becoming a trainer and competing in all events.


In January last year, the rider woke up with pins and needles. Six hours later she could no longer move her legs.


“After MS, my physical ability was affected. I’ve had to come to terms with learning to walk again and learning to coordinate,” she said.


“It took away virtually my right side. I’ve had to rearrange my time and health to be fit. 


“Fatigue is a big part of MS.
