Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a
mental health condition triggered when someone experiences or witnesses a
traumatic event. Symptoms include flashbacks, recurring memories or dreams, and
distressing thoughts. PTSD affects 3.6% of the U.S. adult population, but there
are widespread misconceptions about the true nature of this condition.
- Myth #1: PTSD only impacts
veterans.
Anyone can develop PTSD when they experience or witness a traumatic event. - Myth #2: PTSD has immediate
onset after trauma.
Symptoms may start soon after a traumatic event, but sometimes they do not
appear until years later. - Myth #3: PTSD cannot be
treated.
PTSD can be treated, with the primary course of treatment being psychotherapy.
