Dr. Ralph Kern, SVP-Head Worldwide Medical at Biogen, explains how an imbalance of the immune system can cause damage to the central nervous system (CNS). The myelin sheath, the fatty protective layer around nerves, becomes damaged which can slow or disrupt messages being sent to and from the brain and spinal cord. Though this damage can be partially repaired, MS patients may experience movement and cognitive problems as well as other symptoms such as fatigue.
