* Understanding MS and Treatment
Dr. Hunter presents an overview of the causes and risks for getting MS and perspectives on the causes and meaning of the symptoms. The nature of the immune dysfunction and imaging abnormalities are discussed, and the important concepts of treating MS. How some of our newer medications protect and improve brain function I reviewed. How to measure your cognition, walking, hand function, and overall disability. The use of Patient Determined Disability Score and the Patient Derived MS Severity score are explained. A number of the most advanced therapies such as Lemtrada, Mavenclad, Gilenya, Mayzent, Tecfidera for immunotherapy as well as botulinum toxin for spasticity control, and high dose amantadine for gait. Strategies for improving brain function with myelin repair.
Dr. Calkwood reviews the structure and function of the eyes to help understand the visual issues which occur in MS. Eye conditions which are important to people with MS are discussed including astigmatism, dry eyes, glaucoma, optic neuritis, eye movement disorders, and double vision. Diagnostic testing with VEP, OCT, contrast sensitivity and visual fields are reviewed. Aggressive treatment for MS can improve vision. Finally tips for functioning with impaired vision in MS patients are given.
