Take Action Today:
Protect Rehab Therapy for Medicare Beneficiaries

Without
congressional action by March 31, limits will be put in place on coverage of
outpatient physical, speech and occupational therapy services under Medicare.
Congress must extend the current ‘exceptions process’ to allow Medicare
beneficiaries with MS or other conditions requiring higher levels of rehab
therapy to get the care they need even if they have hit their annual
cap/limit.

In an effort to save
money, Congress passed legislation in 1997 capping the outpatient physical,
speech, and occupational therapy services to which Medicare beneficiaries are
eligible each calendar year. Because this placed an undue burden on certain individuals
with MS and other diseases whose annual costs for these services exceed the
cap, Congress has consistently acted in a bipartisan manner to extend an
‘exceptions process.’ If Congress doesn’t act now, the exceptions process will
end and access to therapy services will be cut off.
