Down and Dirty to raise money at the annual Mud Run MS in Jacksonville

There comes a time in every Mud Run when simply splashing through thick brown water won’t do. Nor will more slogging waist-deep in the mud.

No. At some point, you’re going to have to stick your head all the way into the muck: Total muddy immersion.

That came about two-thirds of the way through Saturday’s 6.2-mile fundraising run for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s North Florida chapter.

Runners approached an obstacle called Over and Unders about two-thirds dirty, but relatively clean from the chest up.
Now they faced four logs placed across an oozing pit of watery mud. They had to go under one log, then over the other. Then repeat.

Uh-uh, said Jennifer Freeman of the Mudbloods, a group of nurses from St. Augustine. She wasn’t about to dunk her head, no matter how much mud-thirsty spectators urged her on: “Under! Under!”

So she angled her chin and daintily slipped under the first log — still clean. The second log she clambered over. The third, though, rested at water level. No way around it, and there was no turning back — so under she went, coming up gasping and spitting.

“That was disgusting,” said Ashley Doyle of the Mud Honies. “You don’t know who’s been in there.”
Such disgustingness seemed to do little, however, to dampen the enthusiasm of those at the increasingly popular event at the Taye Brown Regional Park Sports Complex on Jacksonville’s Westside.
