The MS Society said neurologists in the UK were “stretched to the limit”, care was “patchy” and there were few expert nurses.
Ranking Britain against other European countries in terms of access to MS drugs, it found that only Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Estonia were worse. In terms of numbers of neurologists per people with MS, only Ireland and Poland were worse. And in terms of overall therapy, in a study of 14 developed countries across the world, Britain came 13th.
MS affects about 100,000 people in Britain. The neurological condition often strikes young adults. It can lead to fatigue, mobility problems, loss of sight and cognitive problems. Symptoms are so varied that doctors often have trouble diagnosing it.
The MS Society is launching a research tool called the MS Register this week, in which patients will be able to log details about their condition.
Simon Gillespie, the charity’s chief executive, said: “We are confident, with the right investment, MS is beatable within our generation and that’s why the MS Society is launching the MS Register.”
