It is important to eat healing foods that will prop up your immune system and help you fight episodic symptoms. These foods will not “cure” your symptoms or MS, but they can give you the nourishment to revitalize and recharge during bouts of fatigue and stress. Plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables are high in phytochemicals such as antioxidants. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can protect the body from oxidative damage and reduce the risk of numerous health conditions. Choose fruits and vegetables that are colorful and range from red, yellow, orange, purple to white. Consume a combination of cooked and raw vegetables for the greatest benefits. Some antioxidants such as lycopene and beta carotene are more available when cooked or raw, respectively, says registered dietitian Jenna Wunder of the University of Michigan Health Systems.

Tips

Replace solid fats, artificial chemicals and salt in food preparation with culinary herbs for tastier, healthy cooking. Fresh or dried herbs contain many antioxidants. Researchers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that herbs have higher antioxidant activity than fruits, vegetables and some spices, according to a study published in “Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.” For example, 1 tbsp. of fresh oregano contains the same antioxidant activity as one medium-sized apple. Oregano has the highest amount of antioxidant activity — three to 20 times — than any other culinary herb. Fresh herbs contain more antioxidant activity than dried ones. For beef dishes, use bay leaf, marjoram, sage and thyme. Oregano, rosemary, thyme and tarragon are good complements in home-prepared chicken meals. Sprinkle rosemary, sage and dill on your favorite vegetable cuisines.

Recommendations

MS patients need lots of rest, so make sure you get plenty of it. Exercising may help you manage depression and improve strength, muscle tone, balance and coordination. Reduce salt, saturated fat, cholesterol and sugar in home-cooked meals. A healthy diet that has foods from all of the food groups can help manage your weight, sustain health, provide energy and fight infection.
