Upper limb tremor in patients with multiple sclerosis improved significantly within 6 weeks after a single injection of botulinum toxin A, results of a small, randomized, crossover trial showed.
All key endpoints improved significantly at 6 weeks (P=0.0006 to P=0.0001) and remained significantly improved at 12 weeks (P=0.0003 to P=0.0001), as compared with placebo.
Botulinum toxin A was associated with more limb weakness than placebo (P=0.0005), but the weakness was mild or moderate in all cases and resolved within 2 weeks, as reported in the July 3 issue of Neurology.
“This study suggests a novel way to treat and approach multiple sclerosis tremor (MST), a condition that presents major treatment challenges,” Anneke van der Walt, MBChB, of the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Australia, and co-authors wrote in conclusion.
“Our findings provide the framework for a larger, phase III study to confirm our findings and to establish targeted botulinum toxin injections as a treatment option for disabling MS arm tremor.”
