Does having MS affect your sleep?

Unfortunately, more than half of people with MS experience difficulty sleeping. Inadequate sleep leads to fatigue, the most common and one of the most debilitating symptoms of MS. It also causes daytime drowsiness, lack of mental clarity, and a reduced ability to use one’s resources to solve problems

What helps people with MS sleep?

Make sure your bedroom is cool, quiet and dark. Try a relaxation technique that you like (breathing, imagery or muscle relaxation) once the lights are off. Use your bedroom for sleeping and sex only. Don’t read, watch TV, use your mobile device or talk on the phone in bed.

Why are MS symptoms worse at night?

Spasticity is one of the most common MS symptoms, and often feels worse at night. This is because it can be aggravated by reduced movement, tight muscles and pain from other symptoms

Is melatonin bad if you have MS?

“In the future, melatonin or its derivatives may be used in MS patients after appropriate clinical trials are conducted and dosage is established,” said Quintana. “However, extreme caution should be exercised: Our data do not show that melatonin or its analogs are effective in treating MS.”

Do people with MS sleep all day?

MS patients who have hypersomnia may take frequent naps during the day, no matter how much shut-eye they get at night. These naps can come at inappropriate times, such as during work, and can lure you into deep sleeping spells. Hypersomnia can also cause irritability and anxiety.

Does lack of sleep make MS symptoms worse?

Poor sleep quality and quantity can impact on daily life, causing daytime sleepiness, decreased concentration and memory, worsening depression, and the inability to work effectively. A lack of sleep can also lead to low energy levels or make pain, fatigue, and other symptoms of MS much worse

What causes MS insomnia?

Can lack of sleep cause MS relapse?

“Fatigue is common in MS, and so is sleep difficulty and depression,” Hua says. But this can be a catch 22: If you’re not getting sufficient sleep, you may be setting yourself up for a relapse and worsened symptoms, like fatigue and pain, the National Sleep Foundation says.

Are night sweats part of MS?

Many people look forward to the summer months, longer days and a rise in temperature. However, because people with MS are especially sensitive to temperature, this increase in heat can result in many restless nights, waking up drenched in sweat and struggling to ever feel cool and comfortable.

Why are my MS symptoms worse in the morning?

Do you need more sleep with MS?

However, she explains that many people with MS struggle with sleep — 80 percent report dealing with fatigue. If you have MS, you need more than just good sleep hygiene (a regular sleep schedule, avoiding devices and TV before bed, etc.)
