Are MRIs safe for patients with pacemakers?

Stuart SchlossmanMisc. Research Reports, MS Research Study and Reports

For Natan Livschitz and other people with multiple sclerosis, anMRI is the single most important test their doctor has for diagnosing and tracking the debilitating central nervous system disease.
But Livschitz, who lives in Rancho Bernardo, had a small defibrillator implanted in his chest after suffering a heart attack in 2004 and that makes getting an MRI problematic.
The 2 million Americans with implanted heart pacemakers or defibrillators are warned to stay away from strong magnetic currents, especially MRIs, because of concerns the magnetism could cause havoc with the devices and harm the wearers.
Scripps Clinic cardiologist Dr. Robert Russo believes, though, that carefully-controlled MRIs can be done on patients with the devices and he’s launched a clinical study to test his theory.
